How We Clean Area Rugs – Step by Step
At Advanced Cleaning Systems, we use a proven multi-step process designed to deep clean, protect, and preserve your fine area rugs. From automated dusting to submersion washing and climate-controlled drying, every rug receives the expert care it deserves in our state-of-the-art facility.
1. Rug Inspection
Before cleaning, every rug begins with a thorough inspection. We evaluate its construction, fiber type, dye stability, condition, and any areas of concern such as stains, pet accidents, or damage. This helps us choose the safest and most effective cleaning method for your rug.
2. Automated Rug Dusting
Dry soil removal is one of the most critical steps of the actual cleanin process, but is often skipped by inexperienced or under-equipped rug cleaners. We use an advanced automated rug dusting machine that gently makes contact with & vibrates the rug, removing embedded dust, grit, and allergens, all before washing begins. These dry soils are captured in a large vacuum, simular to what you'd find in a woodshop. It's best & easiest to remove dry soil in a dry state, rather than wetting it & creating mud in the rug.
3. Full Submersion Washing
We immerse each rug in a treated fresh water bath with wool-safe cleaning agents. Gently agitated by hand or mechanical paddles, this method flushes contaminants from deep within the rug's fibers & foundation. It’s safe for wool, silk, and even delicate antique rugs.
4. Gentle Floor Washing
At Advanced Cleaning Systems, our state-of-the-art facility features a spacious wash floor with two separate sections, allowing us to process multiple rugs simultaneously without cross-contamination. The floor’s white coating helps us clearly see soils, urine, and other contaminants as they are flushed from your rug, ensuring a truly thorough clean. We carefully clean the rug’s surface from top to bottom with a mechanical scrubber, equipped with a soft-bristle brush. We only use appropriate cleaning agents matched to the rug’s fiber type, dyes, and construction, ensuring a thorough yet safe wash.
5. High-Speed Rinse & Wringing

After washing, rugs are thoroughly rinsed using a high-speed centrifugal rug wringer. This machine spins out nearly all moisture, faster and more thoroughly than air drying alone without stressing the fibers. Rug centrifuges are much like your washing machine's rinse/spin cycle. We currently have 3 of them. They allow us to simultaneously clean multiple rugs without waiting, therefore eliminating what would otherwise be a "bottle-neck" in our process.
6. Climate-Controlled Drying
Rugs are moved into our custom-built, climate-controlled drying room. With carefully monitored temperature and humidity levels, this environment allows for fast, safe, and even drying - reducing the risk of shrinkage, dye bleeding/migration, or mildew. The drying room is equipped with wall-mounted heaters, dehumidifiers that are designed to operate under high temperatures, air movers to keep the air circulating & motorized drying tower to hang rugs.. They all work together to create the perfect drying environment.
7. Final Inspection
Once dry, every rug undergoes a detailed final inspection. We check for any remaining spots, fringe condition, and overall cleanliness. If needed, the rug is retreated or recleaned to meet our quality standards.
8. Application of Protective Treatments
Upon request, we apply fiber protector-click here to learn more to resist spills and stains, or moth repellant to guard against future infestation. These treatments are applied evenly and safely after the cleaning process for maximum effectiveness.
9. Finishing & Packing
In the final step, rugs are gently groomed, brushed, and fringes are straightened. We use our automated finishing and packing machine to vacuum, roll, wrap, and prepare your rug for clean, secure delivery back to your home or office.
